You are doing all the right things. You hit the gym, you eat the greens, you tick every box, cross the T and dot the I. But you still feel inflamed, exhausted, or stuck. The scale won’t move. Your energy is non-existent. And you’re left wondering the following:
“What am I missing?”
The answer is not another workout, eating less food or a stricter diet. The missing piece is your nervous system.
The Science: Why Your Body Refuses to Heal
Your body operates in two primary states:
Survival (sympathetic),
Safety (parasympathetic).
When you are chronically stressed, your nervous system gets stuck in survival mode. Most women are living here, even when life looks fine on the outside.
When your body is stuck in stress mode, you may experience:
- Fatigue
- Waking up wired at 2am.
- Difficulty switching off.
- Inflammation, bloating, or constant tension.
- You feel exhausted after a workout.
- A feeling that nothing works properly, from sleep to digestion.
Your body does not care about a flat stomach or muscle definition when it perceives a threat.
It is in survival mode and only cares about staying alive. That is why the same habits that once worked can suddenly stop working.
Why the Gym and Diet Stop Working
Let us connect this to real life.
Fat Loss and Weight: In survival mode, cortisol stays high. This hormone tells your body to store fat around the belly, just in case you need energy for a famine or running from danger. You cannot out exercise a hormonal signal that is designed to protect you.
Muscle and Metabolism: Stress also breaks down muscle tissue for quick energy. Muscle is what helps you burn calories at rest. So you are working out, but your body is working against you, breaking down the very tissue you are trying to build.
Digestion: Your body only digests properly when it feels safe. If you eat a kale salad while your vagus nerve (the calm down pathway) is shut down from stress, your body cannot absorb those nutrients. You are not what you eat; you are what you absorb.
Your Thoughts Are Doing Something In Your Body
Your thoughts and your perception of the world around you will directly affect your body.
Science proves this.
A famous study on hotel housekeepers, half the group were told that their daily cleaning was great exercise. The other half were told nothing. The group that changed their mindset, just their perception of the work, actually lost weight and lowered their blood pressure without changing a single movement. Their nervous system felt capable rather than burdened.
This is why you cannot shame, punish, or push your body into healing. Your body is always listening to your thoughts, your stress, and your emotional state. All that is needed is a mindset shift.
Get The Order Right
This is not about skipping the gym or abandoning healthy food. It is about understanding that those things only work properly when you feel safe, rested and not overburdened. You will only feel safe when you balance your nervous system.
Think of it like this. Putting the best fuel into a car is useless if the handbrake is still on. You are not going anywhere; you are just wearing the car out.
Nervous system regulation is the foundation of a pyramid. Gym and greens are the structure on top. Without a solid ground, nothing else will stand strong.
Three Simple Things to Shift from Pressure to Safety
Instead of adding more pressure to an already exhausted body, try the following:
1. Stop Forcing Intense Workouts When You Are Exhausted
This one is important.
When your body is running on empty, pushing through a high-intensity workout isn’t right for your body – it’s actually working against you.
Your nervous system is already under pressure, and forcing it through more stress just adds to the load. Your body will think it is still under threat when you do that HIIT workout or spinning class.
Instead, try a breath-led walk. That means walking with your attention on your breath rather than your pace or your step count. No targets. No pushing. Just you, your feet on the ground, and your breath leading the way.
It sounds simple, and it is. But what it does for your nervous system is actually quite powerful.
You’re moving your body, getting fresh air, AND calming your stress response at the same time. Who doesn’t need all that in one go!
The goal isn’t to do less forever. It’s to give your body what it actually needs right now so that it can show up stronger later.
2. Eat in a State of Safety
This might surprise you, but how you eat matters just as much as what you eat.
Have you ever noticed how Japanese food culture tends to work? Smaller portions, lots of variety on the plate, and a real sense of presence around the meal. There’s no rushing, no eating over the sink, no scrolling while you chew. The focus is fully on the food.
There’s a reason that works. When you sit down, slow down, and actually pay attention to your meal, your body shifts into a state where digestion can actually happen properly. Your salivary glands are triggered by this sense of calm and presence. If you’re eating while stressed, rushed, or distracted, that process gets interrupted even before it even begins.
And here’s something worth knowing, being grateful isn’t just a nice feeling, it’s actually a physiological state. It triggers the salivary enzymes that kickstart digestion. So when you slow down and feel genuinely thankful for what’s in front of you, your body literally digests better.
So before your next meal, try this: sit down, take one slow breath, have full awareness, and eat without your phone. See how different it feels.
3. Prioritise Rest and Sleep
Rest is not a reward you earn after you’ve done enough. It’s part of the work.
When you’re a mother, or you’re caring for others, rest often feels like the first thing to cut.
But your body doesn’t see it that way. Rest and sleep is when your brain processes the day, when your muscles repair, when your hormones reset. Without it, everything else, your mood, your focus, your patience, your body, starts to struggle.
You don’t need a perfect eight hours to start somewhere. Even choosing to sit quietly for ten minutes, or getting into bed twenty minutes earlier than usual, is your body getting something it needs. Start small and be consistent with your rest breaks.
One Last Thing
If you have been feeling stuck and not going anywhere, now you know why.
Your nervous system is not broken; it is simply switched on all the time.
The way forward is not more pressure or more punishment. It is feeling safe first. Once you work on this, the results you are looking for will follow.
